5 standout beauty trends from Fashion Week Fall 2022
Fashion week favourites showed their staying power on the Fall 2022 runways, with glowing skin, no-makeup makeup, easy blunt bobs with natural waves and sleek, centre-parted hair remaining prevalent. But if you’re looking for something a little different, there were hits of beauty inspiration to be found backstage and on the models.
From blue lips at Gucci and Lanvin to the broader return of nail art, the season’s standout beauty looks were a complement to fashion on show rather than the main character. Being variations on existing styles, with boldness adjustable by degrees, most would be easy to incorporate into at-home routines.
Ahead, five notable beauty trends from the runways of New York, London, Milan and Paris.
Deep side parts
Relaxed bangs and sharp centre parts are still de rigueur — making the return of the deep side part all the more noticeable on the Fall runways. Hair stylist Guido Palau created a high-shine sweep at Tory Burch so severe there was virtually no part visible, while the deep side parts at Canadian designer Erdem Moralioglu’s London Fashion Week presentation were less extreme but equally sleek.
Blue lips
A rich red lip is always eye-catching, but it was the dark blue lips by makeup artist Thomas de Kluyver that made a strong impression at the buzzy “Exquisite Gucci” show in Milan. Glossy blue puckers, paired with and without matching eyeshadow, also made memorable appearances at Lanvin Fall 2022.
Black eyeliner
Black eyeliner is a beauty staple of course, but several makeup artists took its application beyond the standard cat eyes and winged liners this season to create graphic effects. Miranda Joyce drew long, heavy parallel lines on the models at Roksanda, and Lucy Bridge added long lashes along the liner at Dries Van Noten. At Preen by Thornton Bregazzi, Kim Brown’s handiwork was paired with bleached brows for additional impact.
Emphasis on nails
The pandemic initially made it more challenging for nail artists to create elaborate designs backstage at fashion week, but nail art made a strong reappearance this season at a number of shows. Nail extensions were used by manicurist Jin Soon Choi at Michael Kors, dark French manicures appeared at Koché and nail designer Cam Tran created custom chrome nail adornments for the Courrèges show.
Bold embellishments
Both facial and body embellishments continue to appear on fashion week runways. At Simone Rocha, Thomas de Kluyver applied pearls and crystals around models’ eyes and on their bodies to match their fashion looks. At Givenchy, makeup artist Lucia Pieroni glued round metal beads on models’ faces and elsewhere that mimicked the look of piercings.
