breathwork teacher training

Anyone can teach a breath pattern. That’s the uncomfortable truth underneath breathwork teacher training right now: the technique takes an afternoon to learn, and the thing that actually matters, what you do when a person on the mat starts to shake or laugh or go quiet in a way you’ve never seen, takes years. I didn’t understand that when I started looking. Back then, I figured I was choosing a curriculum. I was choosing a teacher.

My own breathwork experience wasn’t dramatic, not in the way people expect. Something loosened and stayed loosened, and afterwards I wanted to be able to offer that to other people without making a mess of it. So I read the websites. Some programs were cheap, some were quick, a few promised the whole thing over a weekend, and one had a countdown timer, which told me everything.

Why Fifty Years of Practice Changes What a Certification Means

Here’s what most breathwork trainings won’t tell you plainly: you can study a teacher’s curriculum and still not have the teacher. Dan Brulé has been studying, practising and teaching breathwork for more than fifty years, not five, not fifteen, and the One Year Practitioner Certification traces directly back to the original breathwork training offered by The Growth Center, Inc. and the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in 1976. It meets One Sky International Breathwork Association standards, set in 1990, and Leonard Orr’s Rebirthing Breathwork International standards, and it exceeds the minimum training requirements of both the International Breathwork Foundation and the Global Professional Breathwork Alliance.

So what does it mean to build your professional life on a certification whose roots go back to 1976, whose standards were set in 1990, compared with one designed three years ago because the market looked warm? I don’t think that’s a preference question. It’s closer to an ethical one, and that’s not a minor distinction when a client’s nervous system is in your hands.

What It Means That This Program Requires a Year of Your Life

Look, the structure is the teaching. You keep a daily journal for at least 180 days, which feels like a chore until about week six, when you realise it’s the discipline that trains you to notice yourself before you try to hold anybody else. At least ten personal Conscious Connected Breathing sessions with an approved breathworker are required, because reading about a session and lying down inside one are different kinds of knowing. Weekly coaching calls run on Tuesdays at 2:00 p.m. Eastern, peer mentoring happens twice a month, and you submit oral and written reports along the way, then sit a final Program Review and exam that’s every bit as real as the sessions.

Then there’s the facilitating. At least twenty-five one-on-one client sessions, each with a report, before you graduate. (And once you’ve sat with a client in a full session — with all its unpredictability, its emotional release, its long stretches of stillness you didn’t see coming — you understand why twenty-five supervised sessions isn’t an obstacle, it’s the only honest minimum.) Coaching skills help, therapy skills help, and neither is wrong, but a session moves at a different speed than words, and the question of whose training prepared you for that moment is one you feel in your body, not your credentials, and—

The training you chose is the answer.

Range, Not Just One Technique

Breathing Exercises are where almost everybody begins, and the curriculum here moves well past them: eight established modern methods, from Rebirthing and Transformational Breathing to Holotropic Breathwork, Vivation, Wim Hof, Buteyko, Conscious Connected Breathing and Kundalini or Prana Yoga, so a graduate can serve more than one kind of client. Respiratory anatomy and physiology, trauma-aware facilitation, session intervention techniques, dysfunctional breathing assessment, group dynamics, spiritual psychology. And the Business of Breathwork, which I didn’t expect, but which says that transformation alone doesn’t build a practice.

It also goes where plenty of programs quietly won’t: Death Urge and Physical Immortality, Birth Trauma and Womb Consciousness, Aura Viewing and Sensing. Home study runs through the Legacy Collection, seven courses and more than five hundred lessons, and then comes the part no screen can replace, a minimum of one full week of live, in-person training with Dan himself. Direct transmission, in a room. The weekly calls carry on after you graduate, which tells you whether you’ve joined a community or finished a transaction, and the community has gathered for the 21st Annual Cabo Breathwork Gathering, a number marketing can’t manufacture.

The Part About Money, Time and Honesty

Tuition is $7,560 USD, or three payments of $2,600, or six payments of $1,350, and it’s printed openly, which I read as confidence. The year can compress to six months or stretch to two, since families and jobs don’t pause for a certification. People ask why a program that’s partly online asks for time in person, and my answer is simple: some things are transmitted, not downloaded. That isn’t a loophole in the design, it is the design.

Maybe this is your path, maybe it isn’t yet, and either answer deserves a clear head. What I can say is that the question of whose training you carry into a room full of someone else’s grief and breath is one of the more serious professional decisions you’ll make. Take your time with it. Read the requirements twice, then once more.

When you’re ready, explore the full program details and begin your application at Breath Mastery. If you’ve got questions first, write to office@breathmastery.com. I’ve walked this year myself, I know what it asks and what it gives back, and I’d tell you the same thing across a kitchen table.

Questions Serious Practitioners Actually Ask

How do I know this breathwork certification is recognised by the professional community?
The program meets One Sky International Breathwork Association standards (established 1990) and Leonard Orr’s Rebirthing Breathwork International standards, and it exceeds the minimum requirements of both the IBF and the GPBA.

Why does an online breathwork certification require in-person time?
Home study and weekly live calls run online, but at least one full week of live training with Dan is required, because direct transmission can’t be replicated on a screen.

Is the one year breathwork certification flexible if I work full-time?
Yes. The program runs one year, with the option to accelerate to six months or extend to two years.

How is this different from a cheaper breathwork practitioner certification?
Lineage back to 1976, 180 days of journaling, ten personal sessions, and at least 25 supervised client sessions with written reports. Ask any program you’re considering to show you theirs.
